ZombieTastic Film Scoring -- How Does It Work?
Each film reviewed on ZombieTastic is scored across 30 categories--categories that have
been scientifically determined by the International Institute of Institutional Film Studies to be
the best way to evaluate the aesthetics of a zombie film. That might seem like an excessive
amount of categories against which to judge a zombie movie, but you must remember one
important thing: I have a lot of free time on my hands.
The maximum number of points that a film can receive in any one category is 5, and the
minimum is 1--in other words, a 5 corresponds to a letter grade of 'A' for a category, and a 1
corresponds to an 'F'. I should point out that we're only talking whole numbers here--I'm not
handing out fractions of points, because (a) that seems tedious (and this scoring system is
already kind of tedious as it is), and (2) they didn't teach Base-6 at my high school, so I'm
not even familiar with fractions. The point is, after point values have been assigned for all
30 categories, they are totalled up, and that number becomes the film's score. This is done
so that a movie with a shitty plot or with crappy actors can still redeem its own shittiness by
scoring high points in other areas, e.g. for lots of nudity, or an incredibly unique method of
zombification. Another point is that all of the categories are considered equal: none of the
categories are weighted to be more or less important than any other. That's called
democracy, people--look it up.
A film scoring 80 points averages out to a letter grade of 'C', and is thus considered
"watchable"--anything lower than 80, and its back to the graveyard for the movie in question.
A film must score 90 points or more to be considered "essential", and must score more
than 100 points to be considered truly ZombieTastic.
The 30 categories that films are evaluated in are: Plot, Exposition Scenes, Plausibility,
Production Value, Special Effects, Makeup, Scariness, Goriness, Final Scene, Comedy
(Intentional and Otherwise), Originality, Re-watchability, Datedness, Soundtrack, Breast
Factor/Nudity, Lead Actor, Sidekick(s)/Love Interests, Overall Cast, Token Scientist, Token
Fat Guy, Best Line, Intangibles, Zombie Believability, Zombie Attack Scenes, Zombie "Orgy"
Scenes, Anti-Zombie Weaponry, Zombification Explanation, Signature Zombie, Zombie
Uniqueness, and Zombie Consistency.
Sounds simple, right? IT IS!
